The Last Jedi: First Impressions[Spoiler Free]

I had the pleasure to see The Last Jedi tonight! Despite my dad and I walking in half an hour early, we only found two seats together in the next-to-front row, so the experience was quite up close and personal.

I came very close to tearing up during the opening crawl. This is one of a couple franchises I could say I grew up with and I guess it's a bit nostalgic.

Anyways, I'm pretty happy with what Rian Johnson has done! Here are a couple thoughts--

1. The plot felt a little cluttered, but moved along nicely.

2. A handful of jokes broke up otherwise-climatic moments and I could have gone without about half of them.

3. Speaking of which, I think this and The Force Awakens have a different, less subtle sense of humor than the originals did. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does stand out as a little incongruous.

4. It was aesthetically stunning.

5.  Rian Johnson introduces some news creatures and ideas to the universe that I really liked.

6. This was likely the most character-driven Star Wars installment, excepting maybe Revenge of the Sith.

In conclusion, I definitely recommend The Last Jedi! It did fall short of what I'd hoped in a few ways, but overall I think this is one of the better films to come out of the Star Wars universe and one I look forward to sharing with my kids someday.

If you've seen The Last Jedi, what did you think? How would it rank with the other episodes?

  1. I'm not reading this because I think I want to know as little as possible before watching it (even spoiler-free stuff), so, yeah. :)

But I wanted to comment anyway because IT'S BEEN TOO LONG SINCE I'VE BEEN OVER HERE!! *hugs*

Gack, I'm nervous and excited about seeing this. And I really, REALLY want to see The Greatest Showman!!!!

    1. That's a good plan! I've found the less I know going into a movie, the more likely I am to enjoy it. However, I'd love to know what you think once you get to see it!

Aww, hiiii! It's nice to hear from you again!! How are things for you?

Ooh, I'm sort of intrigued by The Greatest Showman. It looks like it could be good, but we'll see!

  2. Okay, I'm here to talk! Let me hear your whole opinion on it!!!!!!! (I have seen it)

    1. Okay, so first of all-- if you are a random bystander who has not yet seen The Last Jedi, *SPOILER WARNING* for this thread.

Let's see...I really liked how character driven it was-- everyone(except maybe Rose and Leia I guess) had nice character arcs. Also I loved every minute of every Kylo/Rey scene: the "force skyping", the lightsaber battle, all of it! If it had been up to me, I actually would have had Rey join the First Order with Kylo because that would have highlighted the reality of the temptation of the dark side and it would have been an EPIC plot twist, but it also may have contradicted what the franchise has established about her maybe it's good I wasn't in charge. :P

I liked the fresh content that Rian Johnson introduced: the porgs, force skyping, the crystal foxes(awww), etc. Oh, and the development of Kylo's backstory was fantastic.

I did feel like Rose and Finn's side-story cluttered the plot and there were several jokes that I thought hurt the gravity of the story. But overall I enjoyed it!

      What about you?

    2. The characters were awesome!!!!!!!! I did like that most of them had character arcs, but I also really love Rose. I mean, she and I are like the exact same person. The Kylo/Rey scenes were awesome! I got shivers everytime!!! After The Force Awakens I was all about Finn + Rey, I didn't even think about anything else. But then I read a post where the person was trying to figure out who to ship, and Kylo + Rey were in there. BOOM! I started loving it!!! I mean, think about it, Darth Vader and Luke had a father/son love, but, this might be enough to switch one of them over. I serious did think that Rey was turning to the dark side. The lightsaber battles are always ssssooo awesome, but these might be some of the best!!!!

Force skyping was so so so so so so cool!!! I want one fo those crystal foxes as a pet!!!!! And, I was sort of confused in The Force Awakens about why Luke felt so guilty, and the backstory them made was so amazingly awesome!!!

It was a little cluttered, but Rose's quote was my favorite of the whole story: "That is how we are going to win this war, not by fighting what we hate, but by saving what we love."

I was confused by the salt scene, why did they put the ski down? It showed that it was at the end of the red line, and very easy to hit. What do you think about that scene?

    3. Aww, I liked Rose. Well, actually, I did think she was was maybe a little unnecessary to the story, BUT I liked her in the sense that I think we'd be good friends if I were in the Resistance. :D

I've heard a lot about that ship! I don't think I could totally get behind it, but I wouldn't be opposed to Rey leading Kylo (in a totally platonic fashion) to the light side. This and The Force Awakens have spent so much time pitting the two against each other that I feel like one of them needs to pull the other to his/her side.

I really want a pet crystal fox too. They're so adorable!

Yeah, I think his backstory and the way it unfolded was probably one of the better plot twists of the saga.

So this is a little embarrassing since I've seen it *twice* now, but I don't quite remember the part you're talking about. Who put the ski down? The First Order? Sorry. xD

      Have a Merry Christmas!

Comments are my favorite, seriously. :D But please do remember to remain respectful and all that.
